The final round of the 2010 Le Mans Series season will take place this weekend at the Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire, United Kingdom. Spyker Squadron will again enter its Spyker C8 Laviolette GT2R for Peter Dumbreck and Tom Coronel.

Spyker Squadron has good memories of the British Grand Prix circuit after taking a third place finish in 2007 and a second place in 2009. After finishes in all the Le Mans Series races this season as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans the team hopes to end 2010 on a high.

  • Final race of the Le Mans Series season
  • Spyker Squadron successful at Silverstone in recent years
  • Peter Dumbreck and Tom Coronel driving the Spyker C8 Laviolette GT2

Peter van Erp, Managing Director: “We are on the eve of the final race of the Le Mans Series season. In the past three years we took a top four finish here at Silverstone, including a double podium finish. It will be an interesting race weekend because the series will use the new circuit layout – the Arena Layout – and this race is the first of three races for the Intercontinental Le Mans cup, which means there will be a large number of cars again. Of course we hope to get a good result to end the season on a high.”

Peter Dumbreck: “It is always good to race at home as I know the Silverstone circuit very well. The last 2 races were in heat over 30 degrees so the British round of LMS is guaranteed to be cooler and I think the layout of the circuit will suit the Spyker more than the twisty Portuguese and Hungarian tracks before.”

“Last year’s result of second in Silverstone raises the Squadrons’ expectations so we will be pushing hard for a good result. 2010 has shown to be a very strong year in GT2 so everyone has to be on top form to get back on to the podium. So far we have finished every race this year including the 24 hours so above all I would like to have a 100% reliability record and see the chequered flag at the end of race in Silverstone… hopefully high in the points!”

Two free practice sessions are scheduled Friday afternoon at 13:15 and 17:00. On Saturday the team will have another practice session at 9:00 while qualifying for the GT cars starts at 13:10. The race itself will start at 11:55 on Sunday and will run over 170 laps or six hours. Eurosport and Eurosport 2 will be broadcasting live from Silverstone for over four hours.

Volkswagen Group deliveries rise by 11.2 percent in August

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 08:31 AM PDT

Worldwide deliveries by the Volkswagen Group for the first eight months of the current year totaled 4.70 (January to August 2009: 4.15)* million vehicles, representing a 13.4 percent increase on the previous year. In August alone, deliveries rose by 11.2 percent to 545,500 (490,600) ** units. As a result, the Group outperformed the global automotive market, not only for the month of August but also for the year so far.

  • 13.4 percent growth from January to August
  • Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Audi and Škoda report double-digit growth in first eight months
  • Group Board Member for Sales Klingler: “Very pleased with developments in first eight months – but global economy still remains uncertain”

“We are very pleased with developments in the first eight months of this year. Our good delivery situation is explained by our young, innovative and environmentally-friendly model range. This year alone we are bringing over 70 new models to market,” Group Board Member for Sales Christian Klingler commented. “Growth on world markets has, however, lost momentum in recent months. The global economy and international automobile markets still present risks, so we remain cautious,” Klingler added.

Group’s high growth in deliveries to China, USA and Russia continues

The Volkswagen Group again reported above-average growth on key markets such as China and the USA in the first eight months of this year. In China, deliveries rose by 41.0 percent to 1.29 (0.91) million vehicles, while the number of vehicles handed over in India doubled to 26,000 (11,500; +125.5 percent). The Group also reported continued growth in the USA, where deliveries increased by 22.1 percent to 239,300 (195,900) units.

Volkswagen bucked the trend on the European market (-2.0 percent) and posted slight growth from January to August, delivering 2.20 (2.17; +1.4 percent) million vehicles. In Russia, the market returned to its growth path. Here, the Group delivered 79,800 (65,400) units during the first eight months, a rise of 21.9 percent. Furthermore, the Group reported positive growth on all major West European markets during the same period, with Spain (+26.9 percent) and the UK (+23.6 percent) enjoying particularly high growth rates.

The German automobile market, on the other hand, shows no signs of recovery yet. Here, the market contracted by 28.7 percent during the period under review as a result of the effects of last year’s scrapping premium. The Volkswagen Group performed better, delivering 678,600 (841,800; -19.4 percent) vehicles.

Volume brands with positive delivery performance in first eight months

The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand delivered a total of 2.98 (2.63; +13.4 percent) million units during the first eight months. The brand continued its rapid growth on the Indian market during this period. In total, 11,500 (1,800; >500.0 percent) vehicles were delivered there. Growth on other markets such as China (+35.6 percent), the USA (+21.3 percent) and Russia (+18.6 percent) was also very satisfactory.

Audi delivered a total of 726,600 (616,400; +17.9 percent) vehicles worldwide from January to August. The Ingolstadt-based subsidiary grew deliveries by 63.2 percent to 152,800 (93,600) units in China and by 25.1 percent to 65,400 (52,300) units in the USA.

The Škoda brand delivered 493,200 (435,600; +13.2 percent) vehicles worldwide during the first eight months of the year, enjoying particularly strong growth in the Asia-Pacific region (+68.1 percent) as well as on West European markets (+27.4 percent) excluding Germany.

The Spanish brand SEAT delivered 231,100 (228,700; +1.1 percent) vehicles worldwide from January to August. The brand reported a strong increase of 26.5 percent on its home market of Spain, delivering a total of 69,100 (54,600) units.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles grew deliveries by 14.8 percent to 269,800 (228,400) units in the first eight months.

The Audi A1 e-tron hits the roads in Munich

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 07:30 AM PDT

Audi A1 e-tron in Munich

Project partners Audi, E.ON, the Munich municipal utility company Stadtwerke München (SWM) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) today sounded the starting gun for a fleet trial with electric cars in the Munich model region. By the middle of next year, 20 Audi A1 e-tron models will successively take to the region’s roads and around 200 new charging stations will be installed. The “eflott” project is part of the “Model Region Electromobility Munich” sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Transport. It will address a number of issues from the data transfer between the driver, vehicle and electric filling station to the power grid. It will also include a test of smartphones as the central interface for the driver.

  • Project partners Audi, E.ON, Stadtwerke München and the Technical University of Munich
  • 20 Audi A1 e-tron models to gradually hit the road
  • 200 “electric filling stations” to be built
  • Green electricity at all charging stations

The Audi A1 e-tron is an innovative Mega City Vehicle (MCV) with an electric drive. It has a range of more than 50 kilometers in city traffic and a peak power output of 75 kW (102 hp). A compact internal combustion engine recharges the battery when its energy is depleted. Top speed is 130 km/h (80.78 mph). The compact MCV is a zero-emissions vehicle for the first 50 kilometers (31.07 miles) that it is underway, such as in city traffic. The battery comprises a package of lithium-ion modules mounted in the floor assembly in front of the rear axle.

A small, single-rotor Wankel engine in this near-series vehicle increases the range in exceptional circumstances. This “range extender” powers a generator that produces 15 kW of charging power. If the range extender is used to recharge the battery, the A1 e-tron can cover an additional 200 kilometers (124.27 miles) of range. According to a draft standard for the computation of fuel consumption for range extender vehicles, this represents a fuel consumption of 1.9 l/100 km (123.80 mpg) – a CO2 equivalent of only 45 g/km (72.42 g/mile).

E.ON and SWM are installing the necessary charging infrastructure; E.ON primarily in the outlying areas and SWM in the Bavarian state capital. The two utility companies are initially installing a total of 100 “electric filling stations” each as part of a variety of projects. All of the charging stations are supplied with electricity generated from renewable energies.

The Technical University of Munich is responsible for comprehensive data collection and evaluation of mobility behavior. How heavily and in which situation is the electric car being used? And what influence does this option have on the use of other means of transportation? To answer these questions, the Department of Vehicle Engineering has developed a mobile application that will be provided on a smartphone to all participants of the fleet trial. The device will thoroughly document their mobility behavior – from their use of bicycles to the electric cars and from conventional cars to buses and trains. To ensure that the participants always use the smartphone, the Department of Ergonomics made sure that the application features an easy-to-use design that encourages use over the long-term. At the same time, the Department of Marketing is conducting a study to discover which billing models for the electricity used for e-mobility meet with the greatest acceptance.

The fleet trial is being supported by the German Federal Ministry of Transport as part of a publically-funded project. “Electromobility is not an abstract technology issue. At its core is the question of how the transportation systems of the future should look. We are therefore funding electromobility under real-world conditions in our model regions – a large field test, so to speak. Projects like these provide us with important insight into how to make electromobility a success, both in the city and in rural areas. In the Munich model region, we are providing approximately €10 million in funding for electromobility. This money is a smart investment in the future. Our goal is clear: We want to make Germany the lead market for electromobility and put at least one million electric vehicles on German roads by 2020,” says Federal Transport Minister Peter Ramsauer.

“Audi is working hard on the future of mobility. “We are trying to find a concept that requires no compromises,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, who continues, “Electromobility means more to us than just electrifying conventional cars. Instead we are dedicated to a holistic approach to all aspects of the topic. We hope that this fleet trial will enable us to gain broad insights into the behavior but also the expectations of our customers regarding their dealings with electric cars. Of course, the data that we will collect are another aspect. This market and technology feedback will enable us to further expand our expertise in electrification.

Klaus-Dieter Maubach, Member of the Board of Management of E.ON AG, Technology, adds, “In this project, we are shifting the locations of our electric filling stations to existing parking lots as was suggested by our knowledge of user behavior. We are equipping private garages or parking garages, for example, with charging stations. We hope that this will allow us to further develop the technology of the charging points and the communication with the grid operator, in particular, and thus secure our leadership role in the development of electric filling stations. Intelligent charging points are more than just electric filling stations. They are the prerequisite for using vehicle batteries as intermediate storage for renewable energies in the intelligent power grids of the future.

As an operator of subways and trams, SWM has decades of experience with electric mobility in short-range public transportation. The expansion of the charging infrastructure marks their entry to the field of sustainable individual mobility. “The SWM charging stations will ‘pump’ nothing but our green electricity,” says Dr. Florian Bieberbach, Commercial Director of SWM, reducing the vehicles’ CO2 emissions to zero. Our efforts to expand renewable energies is the foundation allowing us to do this. By 2025, we hope to generate enough green electricity in our own plants to meet the electricity needs of the entire population of Munich – including the requirements of electric vehicles. This would make Munich the first city of over one million inhabitants to achieve this ambitious goal.”

“For researchers, it is no longer a question of whether electric mobility will be able to establish itself, but rather of when. Electromobility means a paradigm shift for industry and society, making it a central strategic focus of the TUM,” says Professor Wolfgang A. Hermann, President of the Technical University of Munich. “The Science Center for Electromobility at TUM pools the expertise of 42 departments from eight schools, which are working hard to contribute to the development of sustainable individual mobility.”

22,518 Porsche Customers Chose the Gran Turismo in its Very First Year

Panamera, the fourth series by Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has established itself as another important pillar in Porsche’s portfolio just one year after its introduction to the market. During this period, 22,518 Panameras have already been delivered –– 2,530 vehicles in Germany alone. Additional purchase orders in the four figures attest to the successful development of a new customer segment, especially when taking into account the six-cylinder-engine Panamera currently being introduced. The Gran Turismo found quite a large number of fans, especially in international metropolises.

At the forefront is Porsche‘s traditionally most significant sales market, North America: 890 vehicles are already cruising the streets of Los Angeles and 760 the streets of New York. Interest in the four-seater is also large in Asia, as could be expected: 300 Panamera were delivered to Hong Kong, 223 to Tokyo and 188 vehicles were delivered to Shanghai, where the Gran Turismo celebrated its world premier at the end of April 2009. Very pleasing figures were reported by other cosmopolitan cities, such as Dubai (285), Moscow (203), Munich (206), Hamburg (117) and Berlin (108).

“Our corporate strategy of value-oriented growth has proven itself to be a successful model: With the Panamera, Porsche has clearly positioned itself with the sportiest automobile in the high-end and luxury-class market and achieves already a 13 per-cent share of its segment today”, summarized Bernhard Maier, Member of the Management Board for Sales and Marketing of the Porsche AG.

There are five models available in the new Gran Turismo series: Panamera and Panamera 4 with 300 HP and a six-cylinder-engine, Panamera S and Panamera 4S (400 HP and an eight-cylinder engine), as well as the Panamera Turbo (500 HP and an eight-cylinder engine). With 9,394 vehicles delivered, the Panamera 4S is at the head of the charts, followed by world-class model Panamera Turbo (6,171 vehicles) and the Panamera S (4,563 vehicles). The six-cylinder-model Panamera, introduced only a few weeks ago, has already been delivered to 2,390 customers. The color selection also keeps Panamera drivers in line with the latest trends. So far, the most popular colors for the Gran Turismo have been basalt black metallic, carrara white and carbon grey metallic.

The Panamera Turbo can be customized to your personal tastes with a 40 HP performance enhancer, as well as a sport design package. In addition, the Porsche Exclusive and Porsche Tequipment packages are available for each model as add-ons to the standard series equipment to make your vehicle personal and exclusive.
