Porsche Riley fielded by Flying Lizard Motorsports, Joerg Bergmeister

Heading into the last few minutes of qualifying, Flying Lizards’,Joerg Bergmeister, laid down an insane lap of 1:40.099. This was 34 seconds up on Max Angelelli and Scott Pruett.

In GT, Porsche had 6 cars in the top 7 only to be split by a lone Camaro driven by Jordan “Super Fast” Taylor. Unfortunately, our good friend, Andy Lally / TRG were pulled from top position with an illegal wing setup. Dominik Farnbacher moves up and Magnus Racing / oneighturbo driver Craig Stanton into third. Ryan Eversley pulled up in 6th.

At the Daytona 24 Hours, the Porsche Riley fielded by Flying Lizard Motorsports takes off from pole position. During qualifying for the legendary long distance classic, Porsche works driver Joerg Bergmeister (Germany), who shares the winning car from 2009 with his factory pilot teammate Patrick Long (USA) as well as Americans Seth Neiman and Johannes van Overbeek, turned the fastest lap on the Daytona International Speedway. At the same time, the Daytona winner from 2003 set a new lap record. In the GT class, Dominik Farnbacher (Germany) clinched the quickest time with TRG Racing’s 911 GT3 Cup. Positions three to six also went to teams fielding sports cars from Zuffenhausen.

“This pole is an enormous motivation for the whole team. They’ve worked very hard preparing this car to find a perfect set-up,” says Joerg Bergmeister. “For this reason it’s good that we start from the very front, even though your grid position is certainly not a crucial factor at such a long race. But it was important for us to see that we definitely have the necessary speed.”

Dominik Farnbacher, TRG

“In the infield the car set-up has to be right or you lose lots of time,” said Dominik Farnbacher, GT class winner of 2005. “I found I could go fast without overdriving the car. My team has a huge amount of experience in Daytona with the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. This is the advantage that we’ll be using in the race.”

The 24 hours race starts on Saturday at 15.30 hours local time (21.30 hours CET).

It wasn’t a secret that teams would be testing at Sebring over the weekend but news was that the Audi R18 TDI LMP racer would be there. Here’s proof that it was. Our friend and photographer, James Boone was on hand to shoot some great shots of this Stealth like beast. We also see a bit of the Audi Project Rosemeyer in there… The R18 TDI will use the 3.7-liter V6 TDI. Official winter testing will be Feb. 9-10.
