2012 Hyundai Veloster Rally Car

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 03:00 AM PST

South Korean car manufacturer – Hyundai has unveiled the new Veloster Rallycross Car at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show.

The 2012 Hyundai Veloster Rally Car Weighs in at just 2,656 pounds and is powered by a turbocharged four cylinder engine that kicks 500 horsepower. The power is sent to the four wheels via a Xtrac 6-speed sequential transmission.

The Veloster Rally Car also features a Proflex jumbo coil over suspension and 14-inch Alcon rotors with 6-piston Alcon calipers on the front and 2-inch Alcon rotors with 6-piston Alcon calipers at the back.

Hyundai’s race car driver and founder of RMR Rhys Millen had this to say.

"The Veloster Concept inspired me to expand Hyundai's motorsports program back into their routes of rally, we've transformed the Veloster's lightweight, rigid architecture into a rally car with an engine producing 500-horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque. We hope some of the performance learning's from the Veloster rallycross program have a role in the development of future Veloster models.”

The Veloster rally cars will compete at the 2011 Summer X Games and hyundai said that a third Veloster rally car will be built to compete in the 2WD class in A limited number of U.S. Rallycross Championship events.

HYUNDAI INTRODUCES RHYS MILLEN RED BULL RALLYCROSS TEAM, STARRING VELOSTER, AT THE CHICAGO AUTO SHOW

Drivers Rhys Millen and Robbie Maddison Race New Veloster Rally Cars at X Games During the 2011 U.S. Rallycross Championship Series

CHICAGO, 02/09/2011

With the next generation of Hyundai buyers eagerly awaiting the upcoming launch of the 2012 Veloster, Hyundai fuels the excitement by teaming with Rhys Millen Racing (RMR) and Red Bull to campaign the car in the high-energy sport of rallycross.

At the Chicago Auto Show, Hyundai Motor America adds the Veloster coupe to its motorsports program with the help of champion race car driver Rhys Millen, who fabricated and will race the first 500-horsepower AWD Veloster rally car in the 2011 U.S. Rallycross Championship. RMR and Hyundai are constructing a second Veloster rally car that will be a shared ride between rally champion Marcus Dodd and world record freestyle motorbike rider Robbie Maddison. Millen and Maddison will drive the Veloster rally cars at Summer X Games. A third Veloster rally car will be constructed to compete in the 2WD class in limited number of U.S. Rallycross Championship events and will be piloted by to-be-announced celebrity drivers.

2011 U.S. RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP SCHEDULE (schedule is subject to change)

• Rd. 1             March 26-27    Irwindale Speedway, Irwindale, Calif.
• Rd. 2             April 16-17      TBA, West Coast Venue
• Rd. 3             June 18-19       Pikes Peak International Raceway, Pueblo, Colo.
• X Games 17  July 26-31        Los Angeles, Calif.
• Rd. 4             Oct. TBD         Road Atlanta, Atlanta, Ga.
• Rd. 5             Oct. 29-30       N.J. Motorsport Park, Millville, N.J.

"We feel the Veloster is a perfect fit for X Games and the U.S. Rallycross Championship series as we expand our motorsports efforts," said Mike O'Brien, vice president, Product and Corporate Planning, Hyundai Motor America. "The all-new 2012 Veloster is a playful, fun to drive car and thanks to Rhys and his team we're excited to introduce it to racing fans ahead of its launch this summer. I teamed up with Rhys' father, Rod, nearly twenty years ago for Hyundai's original Pikes Peak rally program, so it is great to be back in the sport again with his son inspiring a new generation."

THE CHASSIS BUILD

Twelve RMR employees applied everything they know about fabricating racecars into the Veloster rally Car. The production Veloster was stripped to bare metal and the chassis spent five days in an Alkali bath removing all rubber and adhesives. The chassis was also stitch welded for added structural rigidity.

CARBON/KEVLAR BODY PANELS

Millen quickly decided to take the already light weight Veloster and make it even lighter. His crew took molds of the Veloster body panels to replicate them out of carbon/Kevlar. The hood, doors, quarter panels, front fascia and rear fascia are all built out of carbon/Kevlar. The carbon/Kevlar panels are 75 percent lighter than the sheet metal they replaced. This weight-saving approach is carried throughout the car without compromising its powerful curves and surface detail or hidden third door.

Downforce has been further increased by a custom RMR rear wing. The hood is vented to dissipate heat. The curb weight for the car is 2,656 pounds.

INTERIOR

The interior of the RMR Red Bull Hyundai Veloster rally car is unrecognizable from its origins as a well-appointed sporty coupe designed with everyday driving in mind. All comfort and convenience features are removed to make way for a custom-fabricated eight-point safety cage and firewall which reinforce the Veloster's already stiff chassis. Braces on the A and B pillars also tie into the strength of the body. The safety cage is required for rallying and a Sparco racing seat further protects the driver in the overhauled cockpit.

SUSPENSION

The RMR Red Bull Hyundai Veloster rally car utilizes a custom suspension with a lot of travel for the jumps rallycross cars have to make.

WHEELS, TIRES AND BRAKES

To ensure that the enhanced power plant translates all the way to track performance, RMR added custom built 18-inch HRE wheels and 245/40-18 Hankook Racing tires. Stopping power comes from 14-inch Alcon brake rotors and six piston Alcon calipers. The entire carbon/Kevlar body is wrapped in a paint scheme combination of blue, white and orange.

ADDITIONAL RHYS MILLEN RACING SPONSORS

• Hankook Tires

• Genius Tools

• Sparco

• BC (Brian Crower)

• HRE Wheels

• NGK spark plugs

RALLYCROSS

A race consists of five rally-style cars jumping and sliding on a road course made of pavement and gravel. Five drivers line up to start at once, piloting 500+ horsepower four wheel drive compact cars through race traffic over a challenging short course that features jumps, unbanked turns, dirt and pavement. Each car must also take a "Joker" lap at some point during their heat. A Joker lap is a small detour – normally over a jump – that adds a level of unpredictability to the heat's outcome, by changing a driver's strategy in an instant.

RHYS VERSUS HIS RIVALS

Rhys Millen will be taking on David Higgins and Dave Mirra in their Subaru WRX STIs, Ken Block and Tanner Foust in their Ford Fiesta's and Antoine L'Estage in his Mitsubishi EVO X to name a few.

RHYS MILLEN

World Champion driver Rhys "Mad Skills" Millen pilots the RMR Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe in the Formula DRIFT Championship and the RMR Red Bull Hyundai Veloster rally car in the U.S. Rallycross Championship Series, including Summer X Games. Millen and his team are an ideal match to help launch Hyundai's motorsports effort. Millen's driving credentials include movie stunts, multiple drifting championships, a Pikes Peak world record and his 2008 New Year’s Eve Las Vegas truck flip at Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. Behind Millen's success in the driver's seat is a full team of engineers and fabricators that know how to maximize the potential of a race car. Rhys and his team will once again attempt to set a new world record at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) driving the Hyundai PM580 powered by a turbocharged Lambda V-6 engine.

With more than 17 years of racing experience, Rhys Millen has established himself as one of the premier rally/drifting drivers in North America. Rhys is the son of famed rally and off-road racer Rod Millen. Rhys won the Formula Drift championship in 2005 and the Red Bull Drifting World Championship in 2008. In 2009 at the PPIHC, Millen won the Time Attack 2WD class in his carbon-bodied Hyundai Genesis Coupe. His time of 12:09.397 crushed the class record.

ROBBIE MADDISON

Robbie "Maddo" Maddison is an Australian freestyle motocross rider. On New Year's Eve in 2007, he set the record (322 feet) for the longest motorcycle jump at Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. in Las Vegas. He followed it up later that year with strong finishes on the AST Dew Tour and Red Bull X-Fighters series. On New Year's Eve 2008, Maddison successfully jumped 96 feet onto the top of the Arc de Triomphe at Paris Las Vegas and then descended more than 80 feet off the monument to a ramp below. In 2010, Maddison become the first person to jump the start gantry at the Formula One race in Melbourne, Australia. The following month he performed an amazing jump over the Corinth Canal in Greece, becoming the first person to cross the canal on a motorcycle. After Looking a little closer, you can see that the 2012 Acura TL gets a redesigned front bumper, a revised grille, updated headlamps, turn signals, new fog lights and a shorter front overhang. The back gets a new rear bumper, a new place for the license plate and smaller rear reflectors.

Powering the 2012 Acura TL is either a 3.5L or a 3.7L V6 engine. The front-wheel-drive 2012 Acura TL will be powered by the 3.5L V6 that produces 305 hp and the Super Handling all-wheel-drive Acura TL is powered by a 305-hp 3.7L V6.

Both versions are controlled via a new Sequential SportShift 6-speed automatic but Acura will continue to offer the 6-speed manual for those looking for more enthusiasm.

Acura Press Release:

Newly Refined 2012 Acura TL Debuts At Chicago Auto Show Fresh Looks, a New 6-speed Automatic Transmission and Upgraded Technology Highlight 2012 Acura TL Changes

Making its debut at the 2011 Chicago Auto show, Acura’s newly refined TL delivers fresh looks, improved performance and upgraded technology. Most apparent are the visual changes that incorporate new front and rear styling, but also present is a new Sequential SportShift 6-speed automatic transmission for improved performance and fuel economy, a revised interior and a host of technology upgrades.

“The 2012 Acura TL is refined, yet aggressive,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. “Already known for its great performance, the enhanced TL has a sophisticated new look and an all-new 6-speed automatic transmission that will take performance to the next level.”

The 2012 Acura TL’s refined new look includes a redesigned front bumper with improved aerodynamics, a revised grille, updated headlights and turn signals, a new fog light design and a shorter front overhang. At the rear, a new rear bumper incorporates a significantly repositioned license plate opening and smaller rear reflectors, while updated taillights and a thinner rear trunk edge trim add to a sophisticated new look.

To increase performance, a new Sequential SportShift 6-speed automatic transmission is applied on all TL models with automatic transmission. In addition to incorporating engineering enhancements aimed at improving efficiency, a sport-minded double-kick-down
feature lets the driver command a double downshift— such as from Fifth to Third gear. The Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system also creates a “blip” of the throttle to help match gear speeds while downshifting.

In addition, the transmission teams with a new multi-clutch torque converter that not only reduces heat build-up during operation, but also allows for lock-up activation during a much wider range of driving conditions— which helps generate improved fuel economy. As a result, city/highway fuel economy is now 20/29 mpg*— an increase of 3 mpg in highway driving over the 2011 TL. To further improve operating efficiency, the TL’s standard 3.5L V-6 engine receives a host of friction-reduction technologies while a revised air inlet system provides cooler air for both the 3.5L and 3.7L engines.

For 2012, two distinct versions of Acura’s performance luxury sedan remain: a 280 horsepower, front-wheel-drive TL along with a powerful 305 hp TL paired with Acura’s exclusive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD™). The performance-minded 6MT model will continue to be offered in the 2012 Acura TL SH-AWD lineup, helping broaden the TL’s appeal among luxury performance sedan buyers.

Both the TL and TL SH-AWD™ models offer an available Technology Package which includes the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™, AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic with Traffic Rerouting™ and AcuraLink Real-Time Weather™, and an Acura/ELS Surround® 410-watt Premium Audio System. For 2012, the hard disk drive (HDD) based navigation system increases in size to 60 gigabytes, map coverage is more expansive, USB connection speed is faster, and the full VGA monitor is brighter with even richer colors. Also available is a new Advance Package that incorporates all-new ventilated front seats along with a new blind spot information (BSI) system that alerts the driver of other vehicles that are in close proximity.

Standard on the 2012 Acura TL are new 17×8-inch 7-spoke aluminum wheels with P245/50R17 all-season tires for confident year-round performance. The TL SH-AWD® comes standard with new 18×8-inch 5-spoke aluminum wheels with low-profile P245/45R18 tires for more agile handling. Finally, when equipped with the available Advance Package, the TL comes with 18×8-inch 5-spoke wheels while TL SH-AWD™ is fitted with 19×8-inch split five-spoke aluminum wheels with new performance minded P245/40R19 all-season tires.

Along with every new Acura, the new 2012 Acura TL is covered by a comprehensive 4-year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty and a 6-year/70,000 miles powertrain limited warranty. Additional benefits of ownership include Acura Total Luxury Care® (TLC®), which provides free 24-hour roadside assistance, concierge service and trip routing.

Affectionately known internally within the company as the "man van," the new 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan R/T throws down the gauntlet for a whole new level of cool transportation for families on the go.

At the heart of the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan R/T is an all-new powertrain. Best cars for conquering land, sea and air

land, sea and air vehicles

The humble car is great for getting us all from A to B along a variety of roads. With four wheels firmly on the ground, we're able to pretty much get to anywhere, well anywhere until the road runs out or a river inconsiderately blocks your route of course. Luckily there are some people who think that the standard car has a lot more potential.

By Land:

Cars have been dominating roads for decades, and are available in a number of different makes and models to suit almost everyone's needs. However there is a car that is considered the fastest production car of all time (for now that is).

The people at Bugatti announced a 1001 horsepower Veyron back in 2005, after its' top speed was beaten by the SSC ultimate Aero, Bugatti agreed that this wasn't acceptable, and released the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport with a breathtaking 1200 horsepower.

With this, the Super Sport reclaimed the fastest production car title by being able to reach speeds of up to 269.8 mph (purchased models will be electronically limited to 257.9 mph to protect the tyres). The top speed isn't the only impressive figure this beast can achieve; it can accelerate from 0-62mph in a mere 2.5 seconds, 0-124mph in 7.3 seconds and 0-186mph in 15.0 seconds.

Unfortunately, if you fancy owning this mean machine, you'll be looking at a price tag of around £1.5 million.

By Sea:

When you come across a lake, river or even the sea and you wish to take your car across, you may think about taking the ferry, but what if you car is in fact amphibious. That's exactly the car you'll get if you buy the Aquada Sports Amphibian from Gibbs Technologies.

This James Bond style masterpiece has the capability to change from a 100mph land cruiser to a 30mph motor boat in less than 12 seconds. The initial cost is a little steep of around £150,000, and buying one will require separate marine and car insurance.

By Air:

With the Terrafugia Transition, traffic jams can be a thing of the past. Recently cleared for take off, the Terrafugia Transition is a car capable of having its own flight path.

Available in the USA for the time being, this £132,000 flying car can be filled from any regular fuel station and is able to cruise on land at 65mph, however after switching the car into a fully legal light aircraft in less than 30 seconds, and then you'll see its' top cruising speed reach 115mph at altitude. It has a 100 horsepower four stroke engine, and is able to achieve a 500 mile range in the air.

Of course you'll need a driving licence to use it on the ground, and a private pilot's licence for the transition, a 1,700ft clear straight is also needed for takeoff.

The price puts this car in the price range of some high end sports cars that have much better performance, but a Bentley or Lamborghini can't get you from A to B as the crow flies.
