| DTM: Second practive sees an even split for Audi and Mercedes-Benz Posted: 04 Sep 2010 05:15 AM PDT During the second free practice session of the DTM at Brands Hatch, the drivers of Audi and Mercedes-Benz searched for the limit in preparation for qualifying. Eventually, Paul Di Resta set the fastest lap time with his AMG Mercedes C-Class. The Scot completed his fastest lap of the 1.929 kilomtres short Indy circuit in 41.101 seconds and thus toppled erstwhile leader Timo Scheider with seven minutes remaining. The Audi works driver had been on top of the time sheets for most of the session with his personal best time of 41.166 seconds. Scheider ended up fourth in second free practice, after Oliver Jarvis and Gary Paffett moved up into second and third place respectively in the closing stages of the session. Thus, three local drivers from the UK locked out the top three positions. The nice balance between the two manufacturers competing in the DTM also became apparent in the following positions: Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz), Mattias Ekström (Audi), Ralf Schumacher (Mercedes-Benz) and Martin Tomczyk occupied fifth to eighth place. On Saturday morning, the search for the best possible set-up took its toll. Yellow flags were out for a while after David Coulthard, Maro Engel and Markus Winkelhock went off the track. Apart from a few kilograms of gravel, the cars remained largely undamaged, so that all drivers were able to resume their session. The longest distance, 54 laps, was completed by fastest driver Paul Di Resta. Scheider and Winkelhock only completed 24 laps each. From 12.45 h local time, qualifying will decide on the line-up of the starting grid for the seventh season round. With his time of 42.019 seconds, the Swede not only set the fastest lap time, but also drove the highest number of laps: Ekström completed 76 laps at the 1.929 kilometres long circuit. At the end of the 90 minutes’ session, Swede Ekström was followed by his fellow Audi drivers Timo Scheider, Miguel Molina, Alexandre Prémat and Markus Winkelhock in second to fifth place respectively. Gary Paffett was the fastest Mercedes-Benz driver. With his AMG Mercedes C-Class, the Briton was 0.198 seconds down on Ekström’s fastest time and ended up sixth ahead of his team-mate Paul Di Resta. The top 10 on Friday was completed by Oliver Jarvis (Audi), points’ leader Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz) and Mike Rockenfeller (Audi) in eighth, ninth and tenth place. David Coulthard, who hasn’t raced at Brands Hatch since 1991, the year in which he won two Formula 3 races there, was classified 16th, 0.631 seconds down. The DTM weekend at Brands Hatch promises a lot of excitement because the track was resurfaced only recently and the drivers first have to get used to the grip level of the circuit. “The new asphalt isn’t as rough as last year, but provides a similar level of grip, so that the required settings will change as a result”, says Dunlop manager Michael Bellmann. After another free practice session on Saturday morning, DTM qualifying will follow at 12.45 h local time. | Porsche 918 Spyder to be on display at the Porsche Museum Posted: 03 Sep 2010 07:32 AM PDT  The Porsche 918 Spyder caused a global sensation on its debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show and Auto China in Beijing. This concept study will be exhibited for the first time in the Museum of Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG at Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, from October 1 through 7, 2010. The Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG decided only a few weeks ago to put this high performance, mid-engined sports car into production. The innovative plug-in hybrid drive of the Porsche 918 Spyder produces the on-the-road performance of a purebred super sports race car, but with maximum efficiency and minimum emissions at the same time. The Porsche Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 am to 6 pm. Museum admission is € 8 for adults, € 4 for concessions. Children under the age of 14 go free when accompanied by an adult. MTM will drop in their own MTM V-Cantronic device bringing the top speed up to 303 km/h (188.8mph) w/ 450hp under the hood. You can also outfit your RS5 with Bimoto wheels and exhaust. No doubt that there will be RS5 drivers who are willing to give their new toy away for an hour. The reward for this short abstinence: a top speed of 303 km/h. This is available with help of the MTM V-Cantronic: a small additional control device, which can be built in by MTM partners or directly at MTM in Wettstetten/Ingolstadt, without any complex reconstruction. The V-Cantronic removes the factory speed limiter of 250 or 280 km/h to 303 km/h. The owners who wait four more hours will be rewarded by a double flood stainless steel exhaust system and the most famous side will be designed definitely sportier and more individual: the rear of the 450 HP sportscar, that Audi started to deliver the last days.
The Audi refiner MTM from Wettstetten offers the first components, which make the RS5 even sportier and even if the power enhancement for the 450 HP engine keeps us waiting, the top speed of 303 km/h is a foretaste of the future MTM RS5. The costs: 1.499 Euros. The stainless steel exhaust system proposed by MTM is with throttle valves and offers not only a good looking rear view with black end pipes (ceramic coating with MTM writing), but also a new sound. The costs: starting at 2.998 Euros. An individually adjustable spring-kit is in development. Typically MTM: the nine –spokes Bimoto rims, which are available in 19”, 20” and 21” for the RS5. The 20” Bimoto forged is a special quality . On top of that, MTM advises a MTM spacers-kit, which widens about 20mm. Price for the MTM rims set and tyres start from 2.249 Euros (19”).
